Density beats footprint.

By Brian Passell, Ph.D. · September 17, 2026

The instinct when you're scaling a dental group is to spread out — grab territory before someone else does.

The buyers writing the biggest checks right now are rewarding the opposite.

What's getting funded and getting premium multiples in 2026 isn't the group with 12 locations scattered across three states.

It's the group that went from one location to three, then to five, in a tight radius — with high-single-digit to low-double-digit same-location growth at every one of them before they added the next.

Density beats footprint.
Every time.

A cluster of well-run, densely-packed locations shares referrals, staff, marketing spend, and management attention in a way that scattered locations never will. It's also just easier to actually run.

Here's the part most owners get backwards: They think the bottleneck to opening location four is a better system or a smarter playbook — the "how."

It's not. It's finding the right managing dentist or ops lead to run location three well enough that the owner isn't the one holding it together — the "who."

Groups that scale by density aren't slower because they're more cautious. They're slower because they refuse to open the next location before the right person is already running the last one.

If you're building a group, the real question isn't "how many locations by when."
It's "who's running this one so well that I'm free to open the next."
