My goal for every owner: optionality.

By Brian Passell, Ph.D. ·

If I had to put what I want for every practice owner into a single word, it would be optionality.

Early-career dentists aren't thinking about what happens thirty years from now.
Late-career dentists often are — and many default to the only exit they can see: selling to a DSO.

That can be the right call. But it shouldn't be the only call available to you.

When the practice runs on you alone, your options are narrow. You can work, or the practice stops. You can sell, or you can keep working.

When you have other producers in the building — associates, specialists — the menu gets longer:
→ Grow into more locations
→ Cut back your hours on your own terms
→ Transition internally to someone you trust
→ Sell from a position of strength, not exhaustion
→ Or keep it forever, because it finally runs without you in every room

That's the shift from thinking like a dentist to thinking like a CEO.

You don't need to know today which door you'll walk through. You just need to make sure there's more than one.
