An empty seat is cheaper than the wrong person.

By Brian Passell, Ph.D. ·

When a role opens up, the math in an owner's head is simple: every week the seat sits empty is money lost.

That math leaves out the most expensive line item: the wrong hire.

A rushed hire usually comes with two problems at once:
→ The person isn't the right fit
→ And there's no plan to onboard and ramp them, because there was no time to make one

Now you're paying for the seat and paying to repair what goes wrong in it — with patients, with the team, with your own time.

Here's what I tell owners: if you've built the right culture, your team will be okay with a short gap. They'll rally to get you over the hump while you find the right person.

Patience isn't the cost.
Patience is the investment.

A few thoughtful weeks now beats months of cleanup later.
